2000

April – First South Summit in Havana, Cuba – of 132 member countries of the G-77.  Havana Plan Action adopted among other issues calling members to improve South-South Cooperation.

 

August – the IIRSA is launched in 2000 and includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, ... IIRSA is the blueprint for electrical and transportation infrastructure in ... includes Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela.

 

September - UN General Assembly Millennium Summit set the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable development in the developing world.

 

October I Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) held in Beijing. The FOCAC meets every three years and focuses on collective consultation and dialogue and a cooperation mechanism between the developing countries.

 

2001

March- UNDP South-South Cooperation Special Unit set up WIDE – Web of Information for Development gathering information on experts and institutions of the South.

 

May - The Third UN Conference on Least Developed Countries realised in Brussels calls for intensification of South-South Cooperation. The conference launched the World Trade University.

 

June – Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) a permanent intergovernmental international organisation is set up replacing the former Shanghai Five created in 1996.  The SCO members are Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Observer members included India, Pakistan, Iran and Mongolia 

2002

June – Asia Cooperation Dialogue is set up in Thailand with participation of 18 Foreign Ministers

 

July - The 37th Summit of the OAU 2001 formally adopts the NEPAD - New Partnership for Africa’s Development strategic framework document.

 

July - African Union (AU) is established replacing former Organisation of African Unity (OAU) .

 

March - Monterrey Conference on Financing for Development calls for South-South Cooperation.  August-September - World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

2003

June – India, Brazil and South Africa sign the Brasilia Declaration setting up the IBSA Forum. In 2004 the forum created the IBAS Fund for alleviation of Poverty and Hunger in the South 

 

August - Establishment of the G-20 group  of developing countries at the WTO Ministerial Conference realised in Cancun, Mexico.

 

August -International Ministerial Conference of landlocked and Transit Developing Countries and donor countries and the international financial and development institutions on transit transport cooperation - Almaty Declaration.

 

September - UN General Assembly changed the name of UNDP’s Special Unit for TCDC to Special unit for South-South Cooperation

 

September - The G90 was established at WTO Conference in Cancun. This is the largest grouping of members in the World Trade Organisation including poorest countries from African Union, LDCs and African Caribbean and Pacific and ACP group.

 

December – High Level Conference on South-South Cooperation – (SSC) of G-77 with adoption of Marrakech Declaration on SSC called developing countries to enhance cooperation among themselves

 

December - Resolution 58/220 of 23 December 2003, the UN General Assembly decided to declare 19 December, United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation.

 

December – II Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation hold in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

2004

January – Joint Declaration against Poverty and Hunger is signed in Geneva by presidents Lula of Brazil Chirac of France, Lagos of Chile and the Secretary General of the UN Kofi Annan 

 

June - UNCTAD XI realised in Sao Paulo with special session on special on The New Trade Geography:  The Role of South-South Trade and Cooperation. The Conference initiated a also a new round of trade negotiations under the Global System of Trade Preferences (GSTP) to be continued.

 

December -  Commemorations of the First UN Day for South-South Cooperation

 

December – Third South American Summit with signature of Cuzco Declaration creating the Community of Nations of South America including 12 countries.

2005

May – First South America-Arab Countries Summit  is realised in Brasilia

 

September – 50th anniversary of Bandung Conference adoption of Declaration on the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership

 

June – Second South Summit realised in Doha, Qatar

 

November - Sixth Conference of Ministers of Information of Non-Aligned Countries (COMINAC VI) hosted by Malaysia establishes the NAM News Network (NNN), a transformation of the now-defunct NANAP or Non-Aligned News Agencies Pool.

 

December -  Hong Kong Ministerial of the WTO Joint Declaration of the G-20, the G-33, the ACP, the LDCs, the African Group and the Small Economies in order to develop a common approach to issues of common interest in the negotiations of the Doha Round.

2006

September   - I Summit of IBSA– India Brazil South Africa Dialogue Forum hold in Brazil

 

September - 14th - Summit of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) hold in Havana, Cuba. Leaders agreed to set up institutions of the South such as Bank of the South, World TV Network, Working Group in Energy Security, University system of the South.

 

November – III Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation hold in Beijing. China announces doubling of financial aid to African nations by 2009.

 

November/December – I Summit Africa- South America Community of Nations in Abuja, Nigeria

 

December - II Summit of the Community of Nations of South America to be hold in Cochabamba, Bolívia.

2007

April - South America Summit of Energy, Isla Margarita Venezuela,

 

April - I South America Energy Summit, Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Leaders launched negotiations for the adoption of constitutive Treaty of Unasur

June - 15th Session of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, UNDP, New York.

April - UNCTAD XII realised in Accra, Ghana

 

 

May - III Summit of South America Nations – leaders signed the Constitutive Agreement establishing Union of South American Nations (UNASUR)

 

May - Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, India, China and Russia met in Yekaterinburg, Russia. This was the first meeting outside the United Nation General Assembly where the group met regularly since 2007.
